I am just back this evening from a long weekend with B., and I am exhausted, and I work tomorrow, and it is late, and there are people I should email and things I should do for various other things and it is going to be a mad busy week.

Clearly therefore I should do that list-of-novels-I-am-going-to-write meme.

In Progress:

Altarwise by Owl-Light, a fantasy novel based on my ongoing attempts to find meaning in the Dylan Thomas sonnet sequence of the same title, my overexposure as a teenager to Renaissance angelology, Machiavelli's play The Mandragora, and, um, Final Fantasy VII. Yeah. It's gotten farther than anything else I've written, so I'm feeling pretty good about it. I have about 25K and an outline, which continues to surprise me.

Some Exists:

The one I will write directly after Altarwise, still untitled. I think of it as 'Eavan' (protagonist's name), or as 'the YA transsexual selkie novel', even though this is an oversimplification. Based heavily on 'The Ballad of Sule Skerry', I'm afraid-- I think there's a law that selkie books have to have that in somewhere. Also, punk rock. I have about 4K and pages and pages of notes. All of the 4K I have needs thrown out, though, and done differently.

The Journeyers, which probably comes after Eavan. I have no idea how to describe it-- sweet and happy anti-romance? Distinct-lack-of-travel-ogue? What is the opposite of picaresque? Anyway the setting has touches of Attic Greece, and the protagonist is physically unable to ever sleep in the same place twice. I have about 3K, all of which is keepable, yay.

The Honeysuckle and the Oak. AKA The Obligatory Arthurian. But! It will be different from other Arthurians! Really! I promise! For one thing, Agravaine is the protagonist. For another thing, my Galahad is, like, a reasonable person, which there traditionally is a rule against in Obligatory Arthurians. I have one scene of this, but it is awesome and made me have to go write 'I will not slash Mordred and Galahad' on the blackboard one hundred times in italics.

K'i-lin. This is about the hideous metaphysical problem of being the only immortal in a universe where nothing dies. I know that made no sense. Sorry. Also, dream-eaters, the woman who combed enough fur to knit herself another cat, and a character I swiped from an old D&D campaign (his serial numbers are very, very filed off). I have some quantity of old attempts at drafts of this, all of which I am disregarding and starting over from scratch.

Dolphin Rise. Science fiction. (!) The quest of a woman who is trying to do the hard, necessary, and important work of importing great white sharks (and some other kinds of shark, incidentally) to Mars. This is the down-the-line I-need-to-become-wise-enough-for-this-book personal-best baby of mine, and my first drafts of it date from when I was, literally, about six. So I am swimming in material for it, and none of it is keepable, and I am going to need to do infinite research, and man I will be glad when this book is next.

None Exists Yet:

The untitled magical-college book which will be essentially a Bryn Mawr memoir with all the names and incriminating details changed enough so that no one who was there has me shot. Actually I have been holding back on this one for a while because they might anyway. It will be very odd to be writing a protagonist who literally is Younger, Stupider Me. This will be a faculty-and-staff-centered book, though, because nobody ever does those at magical colleges, and because that way I do not have to write people quite as recognizably. Except the Dean, who still has to be the Dean. But he's not going to read it anyway.

Okay, that is... seven! More than I'd thought, less than I'd feared, and therefore I shall go to bed.
