Ruth woke up this morning, put her feet off the edge of the bed, and discovered that she was standing in half an inch of water.

Our first impulse was to blame the cat, but it turned out to be much worse than that. We'd got a half inch of water all over the floor, seeping up from between the floorboards, due to the last however many weeks of rain.

Under the bed is our primary storage space for books that don't fit on the shelves.

And my to-be-read pile lives on the floor next the bed. And the comic book boxes.

And the cats, who were very annoyed and behaved as very annoyed cats do, which is to add to the mess.

And we had a large pile of paperwork and wedding presents what need thank-you notes and more books and so on in the corner waiting to be sorted.

And Ruth had a pile of her psychology stuff near the couch to be worked on.

Half a bloody inch of water.

We only lost one book outright, and while I am annoyed, as it was the complete short stories of Angela Carter (soaked through and tore in half before it could be rescued), it is at least still in print and I am going to go buy a new copy right away.

However, the gigantic pile of books that is presently laid out on dry flooring covered in towels and weights contains things such as my copy of God Stalk and my copy of Always Coming Home and a book I borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] sovay, and we won't know how they come out till they are dry, at which point it will be too late to fix if something goes wrong. And I haven't got a book press so I can't make sure to get the weights absolutely even.

As [livejournal.com profile] weirdquark put it (just before being roundly hit with blunt objects), today is just a total wash.
