The yearly explanation of my presents policy:

I always buy most of whatever presents I am going to buy after Christmas. That way I tend to have more spending money, things tend to be on sale, and it is less likely that people will think I am actually buying stuff for, you know, Christmas, instead of for Yule.

I also tend to only buy things that call out to me, saying 'I must belong to so-and-so'. This means that I am extremely erratic in my gift-buying habits. One year I'll spend large quantities of money on somebody, and the next two years I won't see anything that calls their name. Also, I only do holiday cards when I'm bitten by a brilliant idea for making my own.

So, if you are one of the dearly loved friends who might expect to get a holiday present from me... you might, at some point in January. Or February. Or next August. Or you might not, if I am not ingenious enough (and you don't tell me something specific you want).

I always want to make this clear because there are people who buy stuff for me every year-- I've gotten a couple of presents already-- and I just want everyone to know that my holiday shopping attitude is idiosyncratic so they won't think I'm an inconsiderate person who never buys cool things for people. Buying cool things for people is one of the great joys of my life. I love this time of year 'cause I get to pick out stuff that people really ought to have.

Happy beginning of the holiday season, and I look forward to January, when I can give this year's presents.

That makes perfect sense to me. I hate shopping but I like finding perfect gifts. Which are not found on any kind of timetable.

I subscribe to pretty much the same gift-buying philosophy, except I don't even usually buy gifts at any specific time of the year (though that's a good idea for saving money). I just buy something when I see it, if I know that a certain person should have it; then sometimes I'll wait until a birthday or appropriate midwinter holiday (Christmas, Channukah, Yule, Winterfair...) to give it to them, or sometimes I'll just give it to them immediately.
