Announcement on animenewsnetwork today that the film of Howl's Moving Castle has gone into production at Studio Ghibli, and will be released 2004. This is not really news, as Ghibli'd been batting the project around for some time.

What's news is that Miyazaki-sama has announced that he is directing it himself.

Some days, the universe rocks. Previously, Ghibli'd owned the film rights to the book, and had been going to give it to one of their younger and more inexperienced directors, possibly with Miyazaki-sama's supervision, possibly not. Since, after all, Miyazaki-sama has been insisting that he's going to retire for the last three movies. However, he made the fatal mistake of reading the book. He's directing.

Purr.

If you haven't read Howl's Moving Castle, it's by Diana Wynne Jones, the woman whom I insist should have, if given her due, gotten much more fame and fortune than J.K. Rowling.

And if you haven't seen anything by Miyazaki-sama, contact me and prepare to see the single greatest body of work by an individual director in the history of animation.

One of my favorite books meets one of my favorite directors. This can only be good.
