If a person were to be going to Australia for a week in July, where might she want to go? It is after all an entire continent. What might she want to do? What guidebooks do people recommend? Any and all suggestions welcome.

If I were someone who happened to notice this post on my way through friendfriends, I'd say The Rock Tour of Ayer's Rock/Uluruh was worth the money.

Come to Sydney! In Sydney, things to do are - walking from Bondi to Bronte, an italian meal or just a gelato at Pompei's on Bondi Beach, going to the national parks, the Blue Mountains, seeing a play/ballet or an actual Opera at the opera house, catch the ferry out to Manly or Mosman, have Sushi out at Bronte or in Bondi Junction, have tea at the Taka Tea house in Double Bay.

If you do come to Sydney, drop me a line. I'll show you around, take you out for tea or something.

The best part of my Australian trip (I was there for a year) was the week I spent camping in the parks of the Whitsunday Islands (http://www.tourismwhitsundays.com.au/). They're up around the NE corner of the continent, and are right next to the Great Barrier Reef. My friend and I island hopped from park to park (it was practically deserted) and spent our days snorkeling out over the coral beds and reading on the most beautiful beaches in the world. Absolutely incredible. If you do go, be sure to snorkel around Hook Island!

My dad fell in love with Esperance, in the far south, but I don't know how chilly it might be in July.

My favorite was the Great Barrier Reef, absolutely, and the winter weather near there is very comfortable. We took a mini-course in scuba diving, got certified for five meters or something, and saw truly amazing corals and other life. Not so many fish, but giant clams with purple mantles and neon-green eyes! I was just a kid, so strictly on the tourist itinerary, but [livejournal.com profile] pwtucker's camping sounds like about the best thing ever.

I have some customers I'd like you to punch in the face. Are you up for wanton violence while you are there? :)

Ah, only saw this now-- it depends what you want to do! Queensland is full of fab animals and fun things to do; Melbourne is chockablock of awesome cafes and interesting artsy places; Tasmania is pretty and is famous for developing transmittable cancer; South Australia has wines and gourmet foods and little else of interest.

I suck at Australian tourism advice, though- the only place I've really spent time are the ACT and SA, which are the first and second dullest places in Australia. :\
