Six Apart keeps being stupid.

I'm getting a Greatestjournal account as soon as I can figure out how to duplicate this journal over there given the current capacities of my browser/net connection.

But. I am not going to be leaving LJ entirely at this point, for several reasons:

1. I would lose touch with at least some people. I can't figure out how to prevent this from happening, and I can't consider that an acceptable consequence; I don't have the emotional detachment to do that.

2. It is more likely-- unlikely at this point, but *more* likely-- for Six Apart to pay attention to complaints from persons who are still actually using their site.

3. It was pointed out to me that, since I do not at the moment have a paid account (I let it lapse recently) and do not have ads in this journal, I am in essence using bandwidth without giving anything for it in return. I can go for that.

So, new policy: in the past, I've had anonymous parties give me paid journal time before, and I still don't know who they were. It was a very sweet gesture, and I enjoyed using the time when I had it.

Please don't do it again. I do not wish to be associated with giving any money to Six Apart at this time or in the foreseeable future. I will not be doing it myself. I will be putting this policy in my userinfo and will let people know if it ever changes.

And I'll let y'all know my Greatestjournal username when it's up.

The python program I used can migrate to any journal that uses the same coding as LJ -- I backed up on InsaneJournal, but it will work for GreatestJournal too. If you create a GJ account and set up temporary passwords for it and LJ, and tell me the info, I can hack your account and back you up on [livejournal.com profile] gaudior's computer. (Assuming it's okay by her.)

So if you want me to do that, I can. There are also several Windows based migration tools if you want to do it yourself.

That's the one I used, yeah. Worked just fine.

My GJ name is angstnokami, but I haven't figured out how to put everything up there yet. I still have a month to make the transfer before my paid account lapses.

On further thought, I think I'll also be keeping my LJ as a free account. I don't want to lose touch with everyone I've kept in contact with here, either.

[livejournal.com profile] brown_betty has a good post on migration/backup software here, though it's pretty much Windows-only.

Not that they aren't dropping the ball on PR and spin, but this article provides an interesting counterpoint.

According to my Facebook page, my religion is "Devil's Advocate". Which doesn't really mean anything, I guess, but it sounded funny at the time.
