1. I was down in Georgia, and nothing was as real as the street beneath my feet descending into air. 'Summer Cannibals', Patti Smith. Tied for Most Frightening Song I Own with Elvis Costello's 'Pills and Soap', except I listen to this one more often. A perfect little horror story made worse by not knowing what happened and by the odd tone of lust and triumph.

2. It was a beautiful day, sun beat down, I had the radio on, I was driving. Trees went by, me and Del were singing, little 'Runaway', I was flying. Guessed by boxofdelights, kate_nepveu and chomiji.
'Runnin' Down a Dream', Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The music video for this has animated Tom Petty running through the landscapes of Winsor McCay and it is completely awesome and you should all watch it.

3. They put angels in the electric chair-- straight-up angels in the electric chair. And no one knew and no one cared but burning stars lit up their hair, and crawled to heaven on golden stairs.
'God Bless Our Dead Marines', A Silver Mt. Zion. ... yeah, I figured this was obscure, I mean it's a ten-minute musically deranged rant by a spinoff project of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Of those ten minutes I like seven and am incredibly, incredibly fond of two of those. Unfortunately the bits I like aren't all consecutive.

4. Is it asking too much to be given time to know these songs and to sing them? Is it asking too much of my vacant smile and my laugh and lies that bring them? Guessed by saunteringfiend, tirerim.
'Stars', Dubstar. PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE AN UTENA MUSIC VIDEO ALREADY THANK YOU I MEAN LOOK AT THE LYRICS.

5. That old one-trick pony sat down in the dust-- he pawed the air, gunshots blared away. The sun was red as rust.
'Pearl-Handled Pistol', Jeffrey Foucault. I don't actually like this song-- I picked it up while I was looking for dark western songs for something I'm writing. It has a nice honky-tonk atmosphere if not listened to very closely, but the lyrics just bore me.

6. I've got a friend in Jesus, he's got a friend in me. He's a bit hung up on God but we've agreed to disagree. Sometimes when I'm feeling frisky, call you up at home. One time when your boyfriend answered I pretended I was selling mobiles-- Guessed by lnhammer, sovay.
'Summer', Machinegun Fellatio. Best little Australian band ever.

7. [redacted], [unintelligible], O Mom and Dad... Hi. I'm not home right now, but if you wanna leave a message, just start talking at the sound of the tone. Hello? This is your mother. Are you there? Are you coming home? Guessed by boxofdelights, lnhammer.
'O Superman', Laurie Anderson. I love Laurie Anderson to pieces. This is not my favorite of hers; that would be 'Gravity's Angel'; I do find this one consistently both creepy and hilarious.

8. If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone. You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles. Guessed by the_rck, chomiji.
'500 Miles', Peter, Paul, and Mary. I think this is one of the ones they do that's a genuine folksong but I need to look it up.

9. You walked into my house last night, I couldn't help but notice a light that was long gone still burning strong. You were sitting, your fingers like fuses, your eyes were cinnamon. You said you stand for every known abuse that was ever threatened to anyone but you. Why should I know better by now when I'm old enough not to? Guessed by saunteringfiend, batwrangler.
'Stolen Car', Beth Orton. There is another song called 'Stolen Car' by, like, Sting or somebody; accept no substitutes.

10. A newborn child has no teeth. A goose has no teeth. A rose has no teeth. Guessed by sovay, partially guessed by snarp.
'Roses and Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein', Matmos. Ludwig would have absolutely loved watching Barbarella. It is just his sort of movie. No, really, I honestly believe this. Remember how much he loved Carmen Miranda.

11. Last I saw mother she rose from her chair. When they caught me I'd just finished combing my hair.
'Rabbit Will Run', Iron and Wine. Didn't think this was obscure, though it is the newish album. I like the new sound but am confused on a musical level by the last minute of this song, without which it would be basically perfect.

12. You give me that look that's like laughing with liquid in your mouth. Like you're choosing between choking and spitting it all out. Like you're trying to fight gravity on a planet that insists that love is like falling...
and 'Falling Is Like This', Ani DiFranco, guessed by thegorgon, saunteringfiend, mobiuswolf. This is one of the three songs by Ani DiFranco I like.

13. Half past twelve and I'm watching the Late Show in my flat all alone. How I hate to spend the evening on my own. Autumn winds blowing outside the window as I look around the room, and it makes me so depressed to see the gloom. Guessed by snarp, bonus points to gwyneira for correctly identifying the cover.
'Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)', Erasure covering ABBA. I can't tell how ironic the Vaguely Ironic Gay Cover is supposed to be, but I enjoy it on a completely unironic level.

14. Give it up for me, please. Put your hands in the air. If you know what's good for you, you want to shake it like you just don't care. Would you please clap your hands? Guessed by juushika.
'Polite Dance Song', The Bird and the Bee. Extremely catchy and, yes, very polite.

15. He has agreed to take me to the ice hotel from the magazine. What we will need is a gleaming key made of ice as well by the finest ice machine. It's there that no one will stare at your jaws and your long hair, the claws on your fingers. It's in the past when the passers-by laugh at your strange way of speaking, your batteries leaking. Guessed by teenybuffalo.
'The New Zero', Rasputina. This is another of those songs that could be a novella, and it is the best song I know at evoking through sound the feeling of ice.

16. We shall play: Raise hands! The sole purpose of our endeavor is the musical betterment of American youth! What we need is a music fix. (Practice makes perfect.)
'Ten Happy Fingers', The Cuban Boys. This is a techno remix of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. Not a techno remix of songs from the movie. A techno remix of THE ENTIRE MOVIE. It is GLORIOUS.

17. Well, I said, [redacted], I don't feel safe. I feel like life has blown a great big hole through me. And she said child, you must protect yourself, you can protect yourself, I'll show you how with fire. Guessed by sovay.
'Lily', Kate Bush. This is one of those songs that makes me want to learn audio editing because I love the chorus and the verses and I hate the intro and the instrumental and I really love the bits I love and I really hate the bits I hate.

18. On from here, walking, dreams awake, I think not, mmm, I think not. The sky comes king, blown in every direction and of no country. I am strong. It is no mystery; I know my way from here. Iron sharpens iron, crooked, wooden, peacock, black, I have your feathers slung across my back. I'm not the only one to help you down the hill. Guessed by tirerim, sovay.
'Hutterite Mile', 16 Horsepower. There are ways in which 16 Horsepower are my favorite band, and then there are ways in which that is probably not mentally healthy for me, but it is very hard not to put this one on repeat.

19. I took a walk around the world to ease my troubled mind. I left my body lying somewhere in the sands of time. Guessed by sovay, partially guessed by snarp.
'Kryptonite', 3 Doors Down. Early college nostalgia track.

20. This girl is a stencil of a brushstroke in the rain. She's a ghost of the city, she's a body through the windscreen. Guessed by thegorgon, saunteringfiend, ckd.
'This Girl Is Taking Bets', Thea Gilmore. Plays in odd counterpoint to John Gorka's 'Raven in the Storm', if any of you know that one-- if not, it's worth seeking out. Some songs are the other halves of each other.

That was fun.
