Rain, not in Spain
Sep. 20th, 2003 01:23 pmI made it to NYC yesterday despite the SEPTA being down... it was a fascinating taxi ride to the Greyhound, since every time the traffic would actually start moving, we'd suddenly have to take another detour due to a tree or a phone pole in the road. Once we got on the freeway it was fine, but I counted sixteen separate detours to get onto the freeway, including one that literally took us in a semi-circle until we found the one unblocked route. The taxi driver has been driving in the area for forty years now and said he'd never seen that many trees down. Fortunately it was one of those taxis that charges for mileage and not for time spent. Philly needs more small storms so that the weaker trees come down during those instead of Everything Falling At Once during the rare big ones. Oh, and the taxi driver was flabbergasted that we'd actually had classes yesterday. 'But... but every business I can think of is closed, and Center City is completely shut down... and SEPTA probably won't be online again until late tomorrow evening... and everyone I know had the power go out... and you're headed to New York City *on vacation after your morning class*? Is your entire school nuts?' Of course. This is Bryn Mawr, and I knew we'd have classes yesterday morning as soon as I looked out the window and saw that not only would we not have to build aquatic transportation to reach any campus buildings, but it wasn't even raining. I mean, did anyone else see the hilarious article recently on the back page of the BiCo in which it stated that a UFO had landed on Founders Green, was demanding to speak to the College President on pain of destruction of the planet, and classes would be held at the professors' discretion? As everyone around here knows, that means classes will be held and no one will be forgiving of absenteeism.
And I wasn't going to hold off on my trip when the weather wasn't actively doing anything nasty. Clean-up isn't dangerous to be around, and if you're willing to take the time and a little extra money you can still get wherever you want to go no matter what transportation is out. I am having a wonderful time and wouldn't have missed being here for the world, let alone a stupid hurricane.
The kitties say hi to everyone, by the way. At least I think they do. It's hard to tell with cats.
Ruth should be home from work soon. Yay!
*glow* *glow* *glow* Purr.
