It really is a far, far better novel than I ever hoped it would be. Though I am genuinely grateful it wasn't around when I was a teenager, as I think at that time in my life it might have done actual damage. Nowadays I've had enough counterbalancing experience to know there is more in the world than that whole mess, so it was an emotional experience but not, in fact, bad for me.
