it's fifty miles from home, not fifty miles from water. so the claim is not that it walked fifty miles, but that it swam something close to fifty miles from its coastal home into and up a river and then a brook, and then walked some substantially shorter distance from the brook to the middle of the field.

I can think of a couple of alternate theories -- one involves too much liquor and a bet or dare, another requires an inattentive person towing home a boat that happened to have a seal in it -- but yours is far and away the best.
