As I said to Rachel below, I think it's that Martin's landscapes carry no emotional charge. Usually, if we're being told that something is velvet, we're being told that because it's important to someone that it's velvet, or because the feel of softness is important to a relationship interaction, or something like that. With Martin, it's like a detail you might spot in a movie-- everyone is wearing velvet because it is this time period. The sensory details of the landscape give us no information about the people in the landscape, which is making me think I might actually do better with the Game of Thrones TV show because body language. On the other hand, so rapey...
