I was put off by the initial pacing of the book, which IIRC, spends forever on both George and Beatrice's childhoods instead of fast forwarding to their meeting, but the plot twist when they meet and how that's dealt with kept my interest.
But yeah, with you on standard Euro-fantasy etc. etc. etc.
