non-anime people: nothing to see here, move along

My latest anime-what-I-download-and-watch-late-at-night-by-myself-so-I'll-have-something-to-watch-when-I'm-bored is Simoun, which has defeated my purposes by being sufficiently good that I watched eight episodes in one sitting-- twice. The same eight episodes.

I don't particularly want to talk about the premise, even, because I feel that's one of the most interesting reveals the show has, but: it is intelligently written. It has interesting commentary on war, national differences, age, religion, gender and the intersections of the above. It has good music. It is a nice solid mix of science fiction and fantasy. And it's yuri-- much with the lesbians-- but yuri which I believe to be solidly aimed at a female audience, i.e. not simply male-fantasy fodder.

And it has a character who happens to resemble my internal self-conception of what I would probably look like drawn as an anime character than any other character design I've ever seen. So, in case anyone is watching this show and forgot to tell me, does anyone have any screencaps of Mamiina I could use for new-default-iconage? Thanks.

It is fairly new-- the April season, I think.

Because I have nothing of relevance to contribute to the discussion on the anime side, I am reminded of an exchange from the episode of Coupling I saw last night:

"It could happen, though. It could happen. She could be having a shower, maybe, and probably Jane would be there, and she might happen to say, 'Jane, could you help me soap my breasts?' 'Your breasts, Sally?' 'Yes, Jane, it's those tricky undersides.' 'Oh, I know what you mean, Sally. Breasts can be a real dirt trap. Let me get the shower nozzle . . .'"

"You understand that there's a difference between real life and low-quality lesbian porn?"

"You do't know that! You don't know what women get up to on their own! Why reject the only evidence we have?"

I could choose to disagree with "solid", but that statement reminds me of the endless forum postings about the shoujo and shounen genre, and how Simoun and Strawberry Panic are marketed, so I'd best not volunteer points for or against it. It's definitely true, though, that Simoun is not just fanboy fodder.
