Some notes now that I am home
May. 30th, 2006 09:53 pmI don't know how much actual Wiscon reportage I'm going to get to, because I caught some variety of the Head Cold of Doom that a lot of people seem to have had, and I don't know if I'll manage to recover before everything fades out of immediacy in my memory. But a few small notes:
-- for a good writeup of the Dark Fantasy panel which was one of the highlights of my Friday, see
truepenny's journal; for a good writeup of Sunday lunch, which involved
coffeeandink,
oyceter, and some very nice Japanese sf fans who talked with us about yaoi and anime and manga and James Tiptree Jr. and oh lots of things, see
coffeeandink's journal.
-- the Wages of Trash panel, in which there was discussion of what books are considered 'trashy', and some discussion of why, and what value there might be in reading such books anyhow/because of that, was a great deal of fun, and if I manage to get my head together to write up any one scholarly sort of thing, that'll be it.
-- if anyone knows of a good writeup of 'The Librarian as Hero' panel, please point me at it, as it was the one panel I really wanted to get to that I missed.
--
boxofdelights, may her name be blessed, gave me a movie poster for 'Kirikou and the Sorceress', and I am very happy about it. In addition, it was in a poster tube that turned out to be industrial-strength-- due to my baggage limitations (I took a backpack), I had to grit my teeth, cross my fingers, pray, and check it on the airplane, and it came through without a dent. Yay!
--
matociquala made me a tool of the patriarchy. No, really. She bounced up to me and asked if I'd like to be a tool of the patriarchy, and when I said why not she gave me a sticker of a wrench, which I put on my con badge. I believe this had something to do with a reading group that was happening later that day, but I just like being able to go around saying that
matociquala made me a tool of the patriarchy.
-- along the same lines, I forget with whom I was having an involved conversation when I noticed that I was going to be late for the Joanna Russ interview, but in case whoever it was reads this journal, I hope that I was not too confusing when I said that I had to go listen to Joanna Russ because Joanna Russ made me a lesbian. Usually I follow that statement with 'because reading her book The Female Man caused me to re-evaluate all sorts of tangled ideas that had been coursing around in my head since seventh grade and made everything suddenly make sense', and not with 'Oops! I have to go right now!'.
-- as I had suspected,
yhlee and
oyceter are absolutely perfect roommates. We should do this again sometime, only without the bits of the weekend which jumped up and down on Yoon's head.
-- was not sure what the heck to do when Rather Distinguished Editor complimented my toenail polish. I mean, I said 'Thank you', but where does one go from there? Besides the ladies' room, in a fit of panic.
-- I was sitting in
elisem's Haiku Party, vaguely writing a haiku and talking with the charming, witty, and very nicely Gothic
yuki_onna, who was standing across the table from me, when she happened to mention that she was trying to project a slightly more wholesome image for publicity reasons, as her new trilogy is mass-market and therefore expected to be vaguely younger-person friendly. Unfortunately I had to ask her to repeat herself-- I failed to hear her the first time, as our relative positions had caused me to be distracted by the very nicely Gothic elements of her shirt. I didn't do it on purpose, but I have to admit that dragging one's eyes forcibly upward and saying 'what?' upon being told that somebody is trying to project a more wholesome image is kind of funny.
I think I shall go back to lying on the couch, vaguely watching bad anime, and trying to sleep until my sinuses stop trying to kill me. Things such as commenting on other people's journals and catching up on email-- later.
