Diane Duane's latest is out, A Wizard Alone.

It is not quite as good as Deep Wizardry, but then Deep Wizardry is a masterpiece of magnificence that knocks my socks off every time I read it and has helped me be more of the person I want to be. So I already am the person I want to be, so this one couldn't do that to me... but it would have if I weren't. It is so rare to sit in a bookstore just repeating to oneself over and over 'This is so brilliant. This is so brilliant'. And it was hilarious. And charming. And touching. And I cried.

And if you don't read these, go out right now and do so, starting with So You Want To Be A Wizard, and learn why it is that I have always considered the Harry Potter books to lack the depth necessary for a truly great kids' book about magic.

And I am so thrilled. Because the last two in this series have been fun but not great and I was starting to wonder if she just hadn't noticed where to stop. Nope. I can forgive her two good-but-not-great books in a series for a six-book series that contains two genuine masterpieces and two Really Good books.

And Gallian? You need to read this. I can't say why, or my girlfriend will kill me for spoilers, but it's in your subject area.
