Today's poem:

I Have News for You

There are people who do not see a broken playground swing
as a symbol of ruined childhood

and there are people who don't interpret the behavior
of a fly in a motel room as a mocking representation of their thought process.

There are people who don't walk past an empty swimming pool
and think about past pleasures unrecoverable

and then stand there blocking the sidewalk for other pedestrians.
I have read about a town somewhere in California where human beings

do not send their sinuous feeder roots
deep into the potting soil of others' emotional lives

as if they were greedy six-year-olds
sucking the last half-inch of milkshake up through a noisy straw;

and other persons in the Midwest who can kiss without
debating the imperialist baggage of heterosexuality.

Do you see that creamy, lemon-yellow moon?
There are some people, unlike me and you,

who do not yearn after fame or love or quantities of money as
         unattainable as that moon;
thus, they do not later
         have to waste more time
defaming the object of their former ardor.

Or consequently run and crucify themselves
in some solitary midnight Starbucks Golgotha.

I have news for you—
there are people who get up in the morning and cross a room

and open a window to let the sweet breeze in
and let it touch them all over their faces and bodies.

Good afternoon, happy Tuesday! I finally spotted the morning doves again-- well, actually, one of the landed on the back porch and made eye contact with me through the sliding glass door, and then another dove dive-bombed the first one and they both flew off. Fun!

Got some links for y'all here! I'm experimenting with formatting this time. Is this easier to read, or worse?

[personal profile] siderea did an informal poll about some of the differences in educational systems in the US, with regards specifically to when civics was taught.

I did most of my schooling in Maryland and I took a civics class in 9th or 10th grade, but I'm pretty sure we went over some stuff before then in elementary school/middle school. We had mock presidential elections, for instance, so I'm sure we at least went over the stuff about voting.

I also remember seeing the Schoolhouse Rock video about how bills are passed, but I honestly can't remember where along my educational timeline it happened. I AM fairly certain a teacher showed it to us, though!

gone girls long island serial killer doc image

Watching true crime documentaries is, as I’ve learned, part of the female experience. You can label the act an act of “girlhood” if you must but many women find themselves obsessed with true crime shows and stories. Why? It’s unfortunately necessary for our survival.

I’ve often watched a true crime story to understand how to pick up signs, what to avoid, and take in what has happened to other women to keep myself and other women safe. That’s the sad reality of the world we live in. While yes, male presenting individuals can also be a victim to the wrath of a serial killer, more often than not, it is those of us who present female that end up in a murder doc. And that’s what makes Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer such a terrifying watch.

Now that the water pipes at the Park are done (I believe), all the roads are being repaved. And they said, let’s start ripping things up in front of the lady’s house who HAS to go to the DMV today . Also, she’s expecting a package delivery (UPS lied about that). So I pulled out and dodged some massive machine and enormous piles of asphalt to go pay the gov’t money to buy a joke “real id”. Coming back I had to drive like a tank over clumps of asphalt.

I’m working in the back yard every day and it’s a bigger job than I thought. I’ve scaled back my expectations and am concentrating on flowers in pots. I have one tomato plant and we wish it the best, but have no high hopes. There is so much weeding to be done and I’m old and kinda lazy so I do a little bit every day. Plus the cats got out one day and now I have to watch for that. They both came back at traditional dinner time like they just drove home from the office.

The rainy season has tapered off and I’m just watching the weather and sun patterns in the yard this year. My bedroom gets a lot of afternoon sun so I’m thinking it’ll be hot in the summer. But not California hot for endless days.

I have not watched The Last of Us yet. I’m putting it off because it’s going to take an emotional toll. I dropped Acorn and they naturally added more episodes of two of my favorite shows immediately afterward, so I had to sign up again.

Zagreb 80s Museum in Zagreb, Croatia

Furniture and home decor from a Yugoslavian home in the 1980.

By the 1980s, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had benefitted from decades of economic growth that left it wealthier than any time before or since. Good trade relationships with the West created a consumer culture found in no other communist country at the time. The Republic of Croatia, being among the most industrialized parts of the federation, became especially wealthy, and quite a few older people there still feel "Yugo-nostalgia" to this day.

The Zagreb 80s Museum is a house museum that showcases what a typical apartment in the city looked like at the time, including many of the foreign and domestic goods families would have had access to. Some may be surprised at the sheer variety of such items, including Atari and Commodore 64 video game consoles, casino games, and even early personal computers. And unlike most other museums, this one actually allows visitors to touch the displays.

Speaking of my coughing baby vs hydrogen bomb perspective on the various obligatory het romance plots in TOS, I’ve been really struck by how many seem dub-con at best. Maybe that’s partly because I’m finishing the third season and it’s especially pronounced there, and it’s also been particularly glaring with Spock in particular (the Kirk dubcon plots tend to be more viscerally horrifying, but he at least gets to consent sometimes).

Spock has a small fraction of the number of romantic (or "romantic") plots that Kirk does, and while I might be misremembering something in the many episodes I’ve seen—

1— “This Side of Paradise”

The premise of this "romance" is that Leila, the softly-lit blonde girl of the episode, was in love with Spock six years earlier, but his issues meant their love could never be, and he rejected any possibility of romance with her. It's not at all clear what past!Spock actually felt about the situation (Leila says "you couldn't give anything of yourself" and he wouldn't even put his arms around her), both because of his general manner when not under the effect of the sex/docility/spore cult pollen, and because her feelings are so much the main driver of both the backstory and the present events.

Early on, lead spore cultist Elias asks Leila if she’d like Spock to join their creepy community. She replies, “There is no choice, Elias. He will stay.” It doesn’t seem like she actually cares about what he’d choose in his right mind, just about using the sex pollen to railroad him into the life she wants with him. This doesn’t mean she was always like that (she herself has been exposed for a long time, though she doesn't change much when the spores lose their hold on her), but her disinterest in his consent to life with her makes this ostensibly sweet romance 100x creepier. Not helped by the sex pollen itself and her avoidance of explanations when Spock is still in his right mind and could decide for himself.

punisher with a skull

Jon Bernthal is one of those actors you love seeing pop up in things. Especially when he’s playing Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor also takes credit for another Marvel star’s superhero role.

Tom Holland, who is the MCU’s Peter Parker, joined the franchise as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. The film was released in 2016 but was filmed through the summer of 2015, which happened to be when Holland was filming the movie Pilgrimage with Jon Bernthal. Bernthal was doing press for his new movie, The Accountant 2, and was on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The Republican lamppost

In March 1939, Spain was in turmoil. After almost three years, the country's vicious Civil War was coming to an end, and, on April 1, 1939, the fascist dictator Francisco Franco declared victory over the Republican forces backing the country's democratically elected government, known as the Second Spanish Republic.

Franco's new government set out to erase all of the symbols of the previous republican government. Some, however, managed to survive in plain sight, such as an unassuming lamppost at a corner of the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Nearly all of the lampposts in this area of the capital are adorned with royal crowns representing Spain's constitutional monarchy. This lamppost, however, has a small mural crown on top, an emblem of the Second Spanish Republic.

A mural crown symbolizes a city's walls or towers. In ancient Greece, the coronet represented how the gods watched over a city.

After Spain's 1868 Glorious Revolution deposed Queen Isabella II, the new government stopped using the Spanish royal crown as an architectural motif and instead looked to find a new symbol. The Spanish Academy of History eventually advised using the mural crown because it was less ornamental.

Starting in the late 19th century, the mural crown was in use, decades before the Second Spanish Republic, which lasted from 1931 to 1936. There's no way to verify whether this lamppost is truly a surviving symbol of the defeated republic, though many like to believe it is, or if it's even older.

Regardless, the lamppost has withstood the passage of time, maintaining an air of mystery that continues to intrigue both locals and visitors.

Neil Gaiman was accused of sexual assault by a number of women, spanning decades. Now, he took the allegations one step further and is suing one of his alleged victims because she, reportedly, broke an NDA that the Good Omens author had her sign.

Caroline Wallner worked as caretakers on Gaiman’s Woodstock property with her then-husband. When the two got a divorce, Gaiman allowed Wallner to stay on his property with her children. She alleged that Gaiman wanted her to exchange sexual favors for her home. “‘I like our trade,’” she claimed Gaiman said. “‘You take care of me, and I’ll take care of you.’”
