Mind you, I'm not sure I need to. I'm definitely taking Homer, even though it is at an obscene hour of the morning. The prof seems good and the poetry will be amazing. I'm also definitely taking Roman Architecture, which has the potential to be anything from incredible to beyond snooze-inducing. Professor Scott quoting They Might Be Giants in a deadpan fashion is a hopeful sign ('We'll be covering until the second Antonine dynasty, or until the naming of Constantinople-- Istanbul as many of you may know it. Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks'. As four people fall over laughing and everyone else looks confused.)I'll be doing my classics thesis, of course. What I'm hoping is that I will get into McDonogh's Cities and Mass Media course, because it would be such a beautiful excuse to write about punk rock and the Situationists and graphic novels and anime and everything else that one never, ever gets to do serious academic work on. I think I've got a pretty good shot at it, so here's hoping.

My slight room redecoration is being somewhat odd. I counted nine CLAMP posters in my room before I left for break, which seemed to be a little much, especially since this does not so much reflect my tastes as it does the relative quality of the posters CLAMP puts out. So I borrowed some posters from Thrud to rotate-- an extremely nice Spirited Away, with Haku actually on it, and a good Saiyuki. The only Saiyuki-related thing I'd had in the room besides my Yaone costume was this plastic thing I acquired somewhere that has Homura-sama on it in chibi, so I had to borrow something showing him looking like anything other than a plushie. The Spirited Away poster will go amazingly as soon as I figure out how to keep it from falling down on my head, which it has done four times now. The Saiyuki poster... see, I have it between an X poster set, facing the Wolfwood wall scroll, and the colors of the X posters flow up into it perfectly, as do the lines. The difficulty is that Sanzo looks so incredibly hostile and psychotic (though pretty) that I find myself having a sneaking desire to do things such as changing clothes in the closet. It is obvious why Sanzo is so hostile, because Homura-sama is standing behind him, holding the sutra, and laughing, but still, if the poster does not stop exuding visible hatred and contempt of the universe damn soon I am going to have to take it down. Which would be a shame.

I've started watching Wolf's Rain. It is so perfect that anything I could possibly say about it would be a lowering of the quality of the series, and so I will shut up now.

I keep knowing people who are watching Getbackers, so I have a fic rec. http://www.kekkai.org/sabina/NnY/fiction/musica.html . Una Musica Brutal, short story, Getbackers, G (no, really, G), complete. There is no sex, there is only tango. This is of course assuming that there is a difference between those two activities. Didn't we always know that Ban-chan could tango?

And another rec, different fandom, same author-- this fic works even if you don't really follow this fandom. http://www.kekkai.org/sabina/NnY/fiction/velocity.html . Velocity Over Time, Weiss Kreutz (Crawford/Schuldich), short story, NC-17, complete. The uses of precognition whilst driving an automobile. What disturbs me most about this fic is how very beautiful I find it.

That Istanbul/Constantinople song is actually not original to They Might be Giants. My grandfather used to sing it to me when I was little. It appears to have been written by a group called "The Four Lads" in 1953. See e.g. http://www.songlyrics.com/song-lyrics/Four_Lads/Miscellaneous/Istanbul_(not_Constantinople)/147257.html
