You can use the meat browning to make gravy brown. I mean when you make gravy from meat drippings and flour and water, sometimes it comes out fairly pale, and then you can put some in to make it dark brown. It is a thing people do. Personally I serve pale brown gravy in those circumstances, and nobody has ever said "Why Jo, how pale your gravy is!" so it must be OK.

The cake sounds amazing.
