I, also, discovered Pinkwater via a copy of _Lizard Music_ with no known provenance.

Not just media, also geography.

My mother drove me to High School every morning for several years. During those commutes, I read her much of Pinkwater's work. It turns out that most of Pinkwater's stories are set in a thinly-disguised Chicago (where my mother grew up), and pretty much all of the strangest neighborhoods and whatnot that get mentioned are real places that she has been to.
