Jun. 23rd, 2003 10:45 amFinished new Harry Potter book.
Dad, you didn't like the end of the last one-- you probably shouldn't even bother starting this one, then; you'll outright hate it.
I liked it the best of the lot, but then, I am sick and twisted in some ways, and J.K. Rowling, it turns out, is nearly as sick and twisted as I am. Astonishing how much the fandom got right...
The movie of this one should be a trip and a half. Look, a Harry Potter movie rated R.
And I am willing to grant that the prose did not completely suck as badly as it previously has. Still, why couldn't the whole fame-and-fortune thing have happened to Diana Wynne Jones?

The thing about JK is that she isn't the best writer, but for some reason she entralls me emotionally. It's a rare writer who forces me to read an entire book in one sitting. Now that I'm past the age where I want to devour the book instantly, I like to savour the world it's letting me glimpse. But she holds hostage my emotions, especially as I connect with Harry more than any other character, and I have to finish the book in order to know that everything is going to be okay.
We should get together soon.
