Heh, with you on the infant-inappropriate songs. I figure that murderous ballads aren't too bad, though I try not to have a whole run of "and then the girl dies" or whatever.

Anecdote, not advice: one thing I found useful when reading aloud was to gendershift (not always flip per se) pronouns for book characters. Like, I wanted to read Richard Scarry aloud, but the Pig family gets my goat unless modified. Later, it turned into a good conversational tool: by twoish it was possible to ask Reason whether a certain character were he, she, it for that reading session. ("It" to avoid confusing sg/pl at a time when Reason regularly said "You" when she meant "I." She understands sg "they" now.)
