The shortest thing I've personally bought is 800 words. Which is to say that yours sounds like a completely reasonable natural length, although it is absolutely possible to have something be too long at 1K if the words aren't multitasking as much as they should be. I never know quite what to say to somebody when the piece is too long at a thousand words; it's a hard concept to explain.

A lot of people seem to have a natural length somewhere in the 4-6K range when they start out as writers-- unless they're the kind who naturally write novels and painstakingly cut something down to 10K, which is a completely different kettle of worms. But I do see 1-2K not infrequently, and it's a length I like, because if I love it, it doesn't overstay its welcome, and if I hate it, it doesn't go on very long.
